The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1979. Initially the department offered the undergraduate courses with Tamil and English as the medium of instruction. During the academic year 1996 -97, as part of UGC's vocationalisation of Education Scheme B.Sc., Chemistry (English medium) course was converted as B.Sc., Industrial Chemistry with UGC's financial assistance. The main objective of this conversion was to provide employment opportunities to students hailing from the rural pockets in and around Cuddalore. Adding feather to the cap the Department was elevated as Postgraduate Department of Chemistry during the academic year 2013-2014 with an intake of 16 students. In the year 2018-2019 the number of M.Sc Chemistry seats was increased to 26. M.Phil Chemistry and Ph.D Chemistry was introduced in the Year 2019-2020.
For U.G, the department has two laboratories for main and allied chemistry practicals. In the year 2013, a new chemistry laboratory of 4900 sq.feet was constructed from the local MLA constituency developement fund for P.G. course. Laboratories are provided with modern equipments and RO water purifying plant for distilled water.
